Living in the country has its benefits and one of our favorites was hunting mushrooms throughout the season. It was a yearly tradition and we would spend days waking up early and heading out to the woods to hunt these wild morel mushrooms.
While we aren’t living the country life anymore, we still make it a habit to go out during mushroom hunting season to see what we can find.
Where do I find morel mushrooms?
Morel mushrooms are found in the woods during the spring. Typically, you will find them at the edges of wooden areas or under the trees around the base.
If you can’t head out to the woods and forage for morel mushrooms, there are grow kits that you can purchase. The morel mushroom grow kits give you the spores and everything you need to grow them at home, no matter where you live.
Tips for hunting morel mushrooms
I learned a lot about hunting for true morels from my father. Midwest living has its benefits!
My dad was an avid mushroom hunter. There were years when we would get lucky and find enough to fill grocery bags full of those wild mushrooms. Then there were years we didn’t find as many.
It was always a toss-up. Since we lived in a small town surrounded by woods in every direction, it quickly became a competition for those of us who enjoyed the hunt and the tasty morel mushroom recipes we could make.
*Keep in mind there are true morels and false morels. Farm and Dairy has a great article that details exactly what each looks like.
Can I buy morel mushrooms?
Yes! Many local produce stores offer fresh morels throughout the season. These can get expensive though.
They’re also available online allowing you to purchase dried mushrooms or frozen mushrooms for your morel mushroom recipes.
