These are a few of our favorite kids fitness activities. Since these are more like fun things to do as they play, they won’t even know that these kids fitness activities are so beneficial!
Dancing
Dancing is a great way to get kids moving and can be done indoors or outdoors. It was also one of our daughter’s favorite kids fitness activities. To get them moving, try playing some upbeat music and have a dance party with your kids. They will have a blast singing along to the music as they dance.

When it comes to introducing kids to yoga, you’ll want to start off with small doses and short yoga activities. Using stories, adding music, and incorporating play can also help.
Obstacle Courses
Set up an obstacle course in your backyard or local park using items such as cones, hula hoops, and jump ropes. This can help kids develop agility and coordination and even makes for a cheap summer activity for kids.
Other outdoor obstacle course ideas:
- use a piece of wood as a balance beam and have the kids walk along the board to see if they can balance themselves.
- place a ladder flat on the ground and have the kids step through each space between the ladder steps.
- you can have a section where the kids will stop for 20 seconds and complete a physical exercise like push ups or sit-ups.
- trash bag races can be a fun obstacle course activity.
Bike Riding
Bike riding is a fun and low-impact exercise that kids can enjoy with friends and family. We love taking bike rides together and enjoying the weather when it’s warm. Make sure your child wears a helmet and follows safety rules.
Roller Skating
Do you remember heading out to the skating rink every weekend with your friends? This is something we did and while we were having fun, we were also working a lot of our muscles and getting some fitness in.
Jumping Rope
I feel like jumping rope is kind of a lost activity that not many kids do anymore. I remember doing this in school all the time during P.E. and recess. We even had a fundraiser we would do.
Jumping rope is an excellent cardiovascular exercise that kids can do alone or with friends. It also helps improve coordination and balance.
Sports
Encourage your child to participate in team sports such as soccer, basketball, or volleyball. This can help them develop teamwork, sportsmanship, and coordination. Kickball is even a fun game the kids can get together and play.
Even if they don’t participate in an official sports team, have them get their friends together or join them in a game yourself.
Swimming
Swimming is a great way to get a full-body workout while having fun. While playing in the water the kids will have so much fun they won’t even realize all of the exercise they are getting.
Obviously, you will want to look for local swimming pools or lakes where your child can swim safely. It’s even a good idea to enroll your child in swimming lessons that way they get taught all the safety rules.
Fitness Activities for Kids
Remember, the most important thing is to make physical activity fun for kids so that they will want to continue doing it. Have them do these activities with friends and family to make it more entertaining.
