An easy chicken fried steak recipe that makes the perfect budget-friendly meal for the family. Made with cubed beef steaks, this chicken fried steak is delicious.

I was always intimidated by making homemade chicken fried steak. It terrified me because I had no idea what I was doing. One day I decided to give it a shot and the family loved it. The steaks came out tender, the breading was crunchy, and it came out a lot better than I had expected.

Typically, we make a white gravy to go with it. I don’t make my own gravy though because I’m terrible at it. So I purchase a few of the $1 bags of gravy that you just mix with milk or water. It’s easy, cheap, and quick.

Easy Chicken Fried Steak Recipe

Serves: 4
Prep: 15 Minutes
Cook: 10 Minutes (each steak) Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 5 eggs
  • 4 cubed beef steaks
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/3 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 teaspoon pepper
  • vegetable oil for frying

How to Make the Chicken Fried Steaks:

In one bowl, add the buttermilk. In another bowl, add the eggs.

On a plate, add the flour and spices and stir them together with a fork. You can use a bowl, but I find that a plate works better.

Heat your vegetable oil in a frying pan to 350 degrees.

Dip the beef steaks into the buttermilk, then flour, then egg, then flour again. This is what will make that flaky crunchy crust on the outside of the beef steaks.

Fry the breaded steaks until they are golden brown on the outside. About 5 to 7 minutes. If you fry them for too long, your chicken fried steaks will become tough. The meat if completely defrosted will cook fast so you will want to watch it carefully.

Keeping Them Warm While the Others Are Cooking

If you are making a large batch and need to keep the cooked steaks warm, do so in the oven. To do this, heat the oven to about 170 degrees. After the steak has been cooked, take it out of the frying pan and place it onto the baking sheet in the oven.

This will not only keep the steaks warm but will also help dry up some of the extra grease.

Easy Chicken Fried Steak for Kids

While we make this version for the adults, the kids always wanted theirs in smaller bites. Our little one prefers them this way too.

To do this, all I do is cut the beef steaks into small pieces before I drench them in the breading batter. Then, the pieces get tossed in the buttermilk, eggs, and flour mix.

Toss them in the oil and fry them up. Since the pieces are much smaller, they cook quickly and only take a few minutes.

The kids love dipping the pieces into the gravy and since their smaller pieces, it makes them more kid-friendly.
