Saving money can be a tricky thing, especially if you are on a budget. That’s what makes the zero out savings challenge the perfect way to save money. We used the challenge and it was a great way for us to save money while we homeschooled.

What is the zero out savings challenge?

If you’re not familiar with it, you are probably like “huh” what the heck is this? I don’t want to zero out my account to save money.

That’s not what it is though! Instead, the zero out savings challenge is like putting your loose change into a savings account.

It’s not a common type of budget, but it can work.

How to Do the Zero Out Savings Challenge

To participate in this money saving challenge, every week when you get your paycheck check the amount you have left in the bank. After the bills have been paid, put away what is left, rounding down to zero, in your savings account.

I know, it’s a little confusing but this example will help make it a little more clear.

Let’s say all of your bills have been paid and you have $139.72 left in your account. Transfer $9.72 of that into your savings account or withdraw it and add it to your savings envelope. Now, you will have $130.00 even left.

A little more clear? It was for us. We had to hear or see the example before we fully understood it. Once we did, it was like oh.. that makes sense. That’s easy to do.

Makes Saving Easy with a Zero Out Savings Challenge!

We love this challenge because it is super easy. Each week can save as much as $9.99. While it’s probably less than that most weeks, you’re still saving some money and not wasting it. That little bit of money you save each week will add up.

Granted, it’s not a quick way to set back a lot of money. But it helps. If we have some extra play money that week, we may add an extra $10 or so just to put a little more back.

Plus, if you do it with your spouse or partner, that money will add up even quicker giving you more motivation to save.

You can make it a fun money saving challenge for couples to see how much you can both set aside each week.
